Ice cream gifts under $100

Unusually, the best machine in its whole category lives in this price band. You are not shopping the compromise tier.

How we pick

We do not test ice cream makers in a kitchen of our own. Every pick here is an editorial synthesis of published hands-on testing by named reviewers plus manufacturer specification data, cited on this page. Product photos are representative stock images of the machine type, not the specific model. Read the full methodology.

The good news about this price band, and it is genuinely unusual: the best machine in its category lives here. America's Test Kitchen's best canister-style pick in its June 2026 review was the Cuisinart ICE-21P1 at $70 — which beat more expensive canister machines rather than winning a budget consolation prize.

So an under-$100 gift in this category is not an apology. It is often the right machine.

The default gift: the Cuisinart ICE-21P1

One switch, no settings, about twenty minutes of churning. Dream Scoops measured 15 to 20 minutes and call it an excellent value that produces superior ice cream for its price. 1.5 quarts, which serves four to six people generously.

Why it works as a gift: nothing to learn, nothing to configure, and cheap enough that if they make ice cream twice and stop, nobody feels awkward about it. That last point matters more than people admit when giving appliances.

Put this in the card: the freezer bowl needs 16 to 24 hours in the freezer before the first batch, and the base should be chilled for at least four hours. Those two sentences prevent the most common disappointing first attempt. The rest is in the beginners guide.

The cheapest gift that is genuinely wanted

If they already own a machine, a spare part for it is the best small gift in this category and it is almost never bought by owners for themselves.

A four-pack of pints for a Ninja CREAMi owner turns a one-dessert-a-night machine into a stocked freezer. A second freezer bowl for a canister machine is the only way to make two flavors in a day. Both cost a fraction of a machine and both get used immediately.

Confirm the model first. CREAMi pints come in 16-ounce and 24-ounce versions that are not interchangeable, and freezer bowls are model-specific.

For a family that hosts: the Hamilton Beach 68330N

Four quarts in a single batch from an 80-watt motor, and it sits comfortably under $100. No countertop machine at any price goes past 2.1 quarts, so for a table of ten this is the only category that works.

It churns for 20 to 40 minutes and stops itself when the mixture is stiff. Per quart of finished ice cream it is the cheapest machine on this site.

Be honest in the card: it needs ice and rock salt for every batch, and somewhere to drain salt water. It is a summer-afternoon-and-a-porch machine, which is a fine thing to give someone who hosts. More in the big-batch roundup.

For one person: a single-serving machine

The DASH My Pint holds up to a cup of mixture and yields about 1.6 cups of finished ice cream from a 12-watt motor, with the bowl frozen beforehand.

Give it only if you know the recipient eats alone or wants to test the hobby. It is genuinely one dessert, the bowl is small enough to live in a freezer door, and single servings mean nothing sits in the freezer going icy. As a gift for a household it will underwhelm.

What to skip in this band

Anything sold on program count. A cheap machine advertising eight modes is usually one motor and eight labels. Capacity, mechanism and pre-freeze time are the specifications that matter.

Anything whose listing will not state the pre-freeze time. If the answer is hidden, it is 16 to 24 hours and somebody decided that was bad marketing.

Very small machines as a general gift. America's Test Kitchen placed the 0.25-quart Cuisinart FastFreeze in its Not Recommended tier in June 2026, on essentially capacity grounds. That criticism applies to the tier, not just to one product.

A compressor machine. Not because they are bad — they are the best gift in the category if budget allows — but because nothing under $100 contains a compressor. ATK's cheapest recommended self-refrigerating machine was $310. Do not believe a listing that claims otherwise.

Two things worth adding

Ingredients for the first batch. Cream, sugar and good vanilla, so they can use it the day after they open it rather than the week after. The recipe to include is the no-fail vanilla.

Rock salt, if the gift is a bucket machine. They need it for every batch and running out mid-afternoon ends the activity.

#1 The best gift in the bandFreezer bowl

Cuisinart ICE-21P1

The cheapest genuinely good ice cream maker. Plan 16 to 24 hours ahead for the bowl and it makes better ice cream than machines costing four times as much.

Spec sheet

TypeFreezer bowl (pre-freeze required)
Capacity1.5 qt
Pre-freeze16-24 hours
Churn timeAbout 20 minutes
Power60 W
Dimensions9" W x 9.25" D x 11.25" H
Measured noise79-82 dB (Dream Scoops)
Back-to-back batchesNo, the bowl must refreeze

What it gets right

  • Named best canister-style machine by America's Test Kitchen in its June 2026 review, listed at $70
  • One of the fastest churns in the category at roughly 15 to 20 minutes
  • Nothing to learn: pour in the base, lock the lid, press one switch
  • Spare freezer bowls are sold separately, the cheapest way to make two flavors in a day

What it costs you

  • The bowl needs 16 to 24 hours in the freezer, so ice cream is a tomorrow decision
  • The bowl occupies real freezer space permanently if you want to stay ready
  • 1.5 qt is one dessert for four people, not a week's supply
  • Loud: Dream Scoops measured 79 to 82 dB during a churn

Who should skip this

You want ice cream tonight, on impulse, or you need two batches in one evening. The bowl cannot do either.

#2 A family that hostsIce-and-salt bucket

Hamilton Beach 68330N

Four quarts in one go for less than most 1.5-quart machines. You supply ice, rock salt and a bit of mess.

Spec sheet

TypeIce-and-salt bucket, electric motor
Capacity4 qt
Pre-freezeNone, you pack ice and rock salt
Churn time20-40 minutes, stops itself
Power80 W
ConsumablesIce and rock salt every batch

What it gets right

  • 4 qt in a single batch, more than two of the compressor machines combined
  • No freezer space needed for a bowl and no overnight planning
  • The motor stops on its own when the mixture is stiff
  • Cheapest cost per quart of any machine on this site

What it costs you

  • You buy ice and rock salt for every single batch
  • Salt water in the bucket makes the process messy and best done near a sink or outdoors
  • Churns 20 to 40 minutes and still needs a hardening period in the freezer
  • Bulky to store for a machine used a few times a year

Who should skip this

You want a weeknight pint. Packing a bucket with ice for two scoops is not a reasonable trade.

#3 Best small gift for a Creami ownerAccessory

Ninja CREAMi Pints, 4-pack

The accessory that fixes the CREAMi's real limitation. Four extra pints turn a one-pint-a-night machine into a stocked freezer.

Spec sheet

TypeAccessory, spare pints and lids
Quantity4 pints with color-coded lids
Size16 oz, the standard CREAMi pint
Compatible withNC299AMZ, NC300 and NC350 series (manufacturer)
Why it mattersOne pint per spin, so more pints means more servings ready

What it gets right

  • Solves the CREAMi's one-pint-per-spin limit for a fraction of the cost of a second machine
  • Color-coded lids make a shared freezer workable
  • Standard 16 oz size, interchangeable across the compatible CREAMi models
  • Dishwasher safe

What it costs you

  • Check your model against Ninja's compatibility list first: the XL 24 oz tubs are a different part
  • Six pints of base is six pints of freezer space
  • Does nothing for a machine you were not already using

Who should skip this

You do not own a CREAMi. This is an accessory, not a machine.

#4 A small gift for one personFreezer bowl

DASH My Pint

A 12-watt single-serving freezer-bowl machine. It does exactly one small job and costs accordingly.

Spec sheet

TypeFreezer bowl (pre-freeze required)
Liquid capacityUp to 1 cup of mixture
YieldAbout 1.6 cups finished (manufacturer)
Pre-freezeBowl frozen before use
Churn timeUnder 30 minutes (manufacturer)
Power12 W

What it gets right

  • The cheapest way to find out whether you will actually make ice cream
  • The bowl is small enough to live in a freezer door
  • Single servings mean no tub going icy over three weeks
  • Genuinely easy to clean: two parts and a spoon

What it costs you

  • One cup of base in, a cup and a half out. That is one dessert
  • Still needs the bowl frozen first, so the planning problem is unchanged
  • A 12 W motor will stall on a very stiff mix
  • No independent test data from any source we could read

Who should skip this

More than one person is eating, ever. Two of these cost more than a Cuisinart ICE-21 that makes eight times as much.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What is the best ice cream maker gift under $100?

The Cuisinart ICE-21P1. America's Test Kitchen listed it at $70 in June 2026 as their best canister-style machine outright, beating more expensive canister machines rather than winning a budget category. It has one switch, makes 1.5 quarts and churns in about 20 minutes.

Can you get a good ice cream maker for under $100?

Yes, unusually for a kitchen appliance category. The best canister-style machine in America's Test Kitchen's June 2026 review sits in this band at $70, and a 4-quart bucket machine does too. What you cannot get under $100 is a compressor machine, since ATK's cheapest recommended self-refrigerating model was $310.

What is a good cheap gift for someone who already has an ice cream maker?

A spare part for their specific machine, which owners rarely buy for themselves. Four spare pints for a Ninja CREAMi owner, or a second freezer bowl for a canister machine, which is the only way to make two flavors in one day. Confirm the exact model first, since CREAMi pints come in two non-interchangeable sizes.

Are cheap single-serving ice cream makers a good gift?

Only for someone who eats alone or wants to test the hobby. A machine yielding about 1.6 cups is genuinely one dessert, and America's Test Kitchen placed a comparable 0.25-quart machine in its Not Recommended tier in June 2026 largely on capacity grounds. For a household it will underwhelm.

What should I add to an ice cream maker gift?

Cream, sugar and good vanilla, so the recipient can use it the day after opening rather than the week after, plus a note that the freezer bowl needs 16 to 24 hours in the freezer and the base needs four hours in the fridge. If the gift is a bucket machine, add rock salt, which is needed for every batch.
